  • Guests with powerboats cannot launch them from the cabin. They can launch them at the public boat launch site about 3 miles from the cabin (as the crow flies).
  • Guests can 'moor' their boats in front of the cabin. This requires anchoring or tying off on a tree and wading to shore because there is no dock. (It is against DNR regulations to have a dock on the protected side of Lake Monroe.)
  • There is easy in and out access for parking small boats no more than 18' in length at the top of the hill, but in ALL cases you must launch your boat at the nearby public access Salt Creek boat ramp on osuth on TC Steele Rd. Larger boats will struggle with in/out parking so they MUST go initially to the public boat ramp.

The Lake House, a contemporary, immaculate, upscale getaway cottage located in Hoosier National Forest, is situated on a secluded bluff overlooking the protected watershed of beautiful Lake Monroe.

The cottage has three separate decks, all with great views of the lake and abundant opportunities to spot eagle nesting grounds, or in winter, when the eagle population triples on the lake, juvenile bald eagles. Warmer months you may see many visiting egrets, shorebirds, blue herons and other waterfowl. You may also see a variety of birds in the trees, circling hawks, and, of course, the clean up crew, turkey vultures.

A short hike down to the lake offers paddle boating (1 provided), canoeing (1 provided) and splendid kayaking venues (2 provided). On December 2, 2018, 13 eagles of all ages were spotted by kayak between The Lake House and Crooked Creek boat ramp. The Monroe Lake eagle count triples in the winter months as visiting eagles explore. Explore the four wooded acres that surround the cottage or take a leisurely stroll in either direction along the lake or on the picturesque country gravel road. Bring your gear for fishing along the bank or from the paddle boats (Indiana fishing license required).

The Lake House has a main floor with family room and complete kitchen separated from a living room, full sized futon bedroom, half bath and two viewing decks, one covered. The cozy upstairs loft offers a king size bed, full bathroom with shower, reading nook with futon and its own private balcony.

Watch a beautiful Brown County sunset and relax to the sound of silence. Or enjoy one of the many board games provided or your favorite Satellite TV stations and, DVD’s in the living room or comfort of the loft bedroom.

A quality gas grill and full array of grilling gear is provided for the gourmet griller. A stainless steel barbeque griddle perfect for pancakes, omelets, salmon and steaks offers a flare-up free cooking surface. An additional cast iron griddle is provided for smaller items and for making your favorite grilled sandwiches. Included also is a veggie grilling basket, flaky fish grill top and plenty of skewers for making your favorite kabobs. There’s even a stainless steel sauce pan for your marinades and barbeque sauces.

The Lake House is centrally located. It is just 15 miles from Bloomington Indiana’s most vibrant arts, culture and dining community as well as Brown County, The cottage is just a short 15 mile drive to Nashville with its quaint shops and restaurants. You can even launch your power boat at the Salt Creek boat ramp located just 5 miles away and moor it in front of the cottage (Pull through parking at The Lake House makes trailering a small boat a breeze). Or visit the T.C. Steele State Historic Site, studio of the famous 19th century impressionist painter, or the many artist studios of the famous Brown County Art Colony.

The Lake House is a short 10 miles from Brown County State Park Indiana’s largest with playgrounds, swimming pools, tennis courts, hiking and mountain bike trails. Yellowwood State Forest offers back country hiking, picnicking and canoeing. Horseback riding is available at nearby Schooner Valley Stables as well as Brown County State Park.

The Lake House is your place to relax, reflect and reconnect with nature. You won’t be disappointed.

SPECIAL NOTE: The Lake House is located on a well maintained gravel road and has easy in and out access. Management, is not responsible, nor will it issue refunds for, road conditions due to weather.

  • Lake Monroe is the largest lake in Indiana.
The Monroe Reservoir was constructed by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1965. It is fed by Salt Creek and its tributaries. The lake is 10,750 acres in size. Maximum lake depth is 54 feet with an average depth of 17.3 feet.
  • Bald Eagles thrive at Lake Monroe.
Lake Monroe manages 21,817 acres for wildlife and fisheries. Forests, fields and marshes are maintained for waterfowl, deer, quail, mourning doves, rabbits and other wildlife. Nest boxes for swallows, bluebirds and prothonotary warblers are maintained. In 1985, Lake Monroe became the release site for a state bald eagle reintroduction program. The program was extremely successful and today, bald eagles are a common sight at the lake.
  • The Lakehouse is adjacent to Middlefork Waterfowl Resting Area
The lake is accessed from eight state recreation areas, two state wildlife refuges, the Hoosier National Forest and ten public boat ramps. All of the shoreline is publically owned. Eagles nest at Crooked Creek Marshes and Stillwater Marsh near this cabin.
