IU Football Kickoff Weekend 2026: Things to Do in Bloomington, Nashville & Where to Stay
College football is back in Bloomington — and this year’s season opener comes with a little more excitement than usual.
The defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers open the 2026 season at home against North Texas on Saturday, September 5 at noon at Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium. FOX will televise the game, and Big Noon Kickoff will be live from Bloomington, adding even more energy to an already big opening weekend. Indiana enters the season after a historic 16-0 championship run in 2025.
Whether you're coming back to Bloomington as an IU alum, visiting your student, bringing the family to a game, or simply looking for a fun Southern Indiana getaway, there is plenty to do beyond the stadium.

Start Your Weekend in Bloomington
Arrive on Friday and give yourself time to enjoy Bloomington before game-day crowds take over.
A walk through Indiana University's campus is always a good place to start. Stop for a photo at the Sample Gates, see the historic limestone buildings and then wander through Kirkwood Avenue toward downtown Bloomington. Kirkwood is one of the city's signature destinations, lined with restaurants, shops and familiar IU gathering spots like Nick's English Hut.

For the 2026 season, IU is introducing the new Indiana Football AAA Championship Tailgate on the south lawn of Memorial Stadium. The free pregame area opens three hours before kickoff and includes live entertainment, food trucks, a kids zone and a 15-foot College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy photo opportunity. Big Noon Kickoff will also be set up nearby for the season opener.
With a noon kickoff, plan to arrive at the stadium early. Enjoy the tailgate atmosphere, take in Big Noon Kickoff and then head inside Memorial Stadium as Indiana begins its title defense against North Texas.
After the game, however, you don't have to spend the rest of the evening sitting in Bloomington traffic or heading straight back to a hotel.
